As an employer, carrying out risk assessments to protect your employees, contractors, and members of the public should come as second nature and is your legal responsibility – but are you including everything in your risk assessment?

What is the Purpose of a Risk Assessment?

The ultimate purpose of a risk assessment is to protect workers and members of the public from harm through a comprehensive evaluation of an organisation’s Health & Safety. Your risk assessments should identify, monitor, and review any dangers in your working environment, and you’ll need to update or implement additional safety protocols if necessary. They’re often used in conjunction with method statements that explain how you’re reducing or eliminating the risks you have highlighted.

How often should a risk assessment be reviewed?

Under Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidance, a risk assessment should be reviewed at least once a year. However, if the nature of your work changes in terms of business operations, new staff, or hazards that are present in the workplace, risk assessments should be conducted accordingly. In the event of an accident in your workplace, you’ll also need to review your risk assessments.
