As an employer, you must appoint a competent person or people to help you meet your health and safety legal duties. Usually, managing health and safety isn’t complicated especially if you’re using our Safety First Pack.

You know your workplace best and the risks associated with it after all.

What makes someone competent?

It’s not usually essential for them to have formal qualifications and they’re not required by law to have formal training, although it can help. Whoever you choose should have the skills, knowledge and experience to manage health and safety.

Who you can appoint?

You could appoint (one or a combination of):

  • yourself
  • one or more of your workers
  • someone from outside your business

If someone within your workforce is competent, use them rather than a competent person from outside your business.

Using a consultant or adviser..

If your business or organisation isn’t able to manage health and safety in-house or you’d prefer to have this managed externally, you can get outside help from a consultant or adviser like HS Direct.
