Employment Status Must-knows for Hair & Beauty Businesses

Due to the nature of the industry, the beauty sector sees individuals regularly being engaged under all of the three employment statuses which operate in the UK:

  • Employee: those employed on a PAYE basis with full employment rights. Such individuals normally have semi-regular or regular hours of work on a permanent basis.
  • Worker: also employed on a PAYE basis but with no guarantee of hours. This can be zero-hour, agency and casually employed staff.
  • Self-employed: these individuals are not paid on a PAYE basis and will often operate under a contract for services or via a room/chair rental agreement.

An individual’s employment status is a question of fact, and getting it wrong can result in significant costs arising, either via an employment tribunal claim or an HMRC investigation.

To help, our HR & Employment experts have covered the must-knows for businesses in the beauty and related industries – from hair, barbering and nails to tattooing, aesthetics and cosmetics (and everything in between).
